Legend of Dragon at Kadoike Pond

Kadoike park is located in a place which is about 3 minutes walk from our Numazu HQ factory. The park has 1.3km promenade and there are benches placed in the area so that visitors can sit and enjoy the seasonal beauty. This is a legendary story of the pond in Kadoike park.

  • A long time ago, there was a married couple of dragons living in the sky. They had a rainbow-colored ball given by the god Taishakuten as a gift. This rainbow ball could create clouds and even pour rain on the ground. One day the wife tripped on the ball and dropped it down to Kadoike pond. She felt guilty and decided to go down to look for the ball. The husband tried to stop her but she didn't listen. She would never be able to come back to the sky once she went down to earth. Unfortunately, the pond was too big for such a small ball to be found.
Years passed and the wife realized she would never go back to the sky. She cried with so much sorrow. When the god Taishakuten saw her, he felt sorry for her and he made the ball glow after a thousand years. The wife saw the ball glowing brightly at the center of the pond. She was so delighted that she created clouds and made them pour rain using the power of the rainbow ball. Then she was able to go back to the sky. The dragon couple lived happily ever after.
  • Because of this legend, people started a certain ritual when they prayed for rain; they made two straw dragons, sank one (wife) into the pond and hung the other (husband) on a tree and the priests recited sutras. A dragon is still a major symbol used in events held in neighborhood schools.
